It is effortless. First, you have to either know how many cigarettes or how many packs you smoke a day. Then input how long you have been smoking for - in years, months, weeks, or even maybe days. And that's it! The result is the total number of cigarettes you have smoked in your life - a rough estimation of course.
Let's take a look at... Joe.
Joe smokes five cigarettes daily, so one-fourth of a pack every day. He started at the age of 20; now, Joe is 45 years old and has been smoking for the past 25 years.
How many cigarettes has he smoked so far?
5 cigarettes/day x 25 years = 45,656 cigarettes

What are the risks of smoking?
Smoking is closely associated with an increased risk of contracting numerous diseases and conditions, such as:
- lung cancer
- larynx cancer
- bladder cancer
As well as:
- coronary heart disease
- stroke
- infertility
In some types of lung cancer, at least 80 percent of cases can be attributed to smoking. If you want to calculate the risk of suffering from lung cancer, you can estimate it with our lung cancer risk calculator.
Studies show that the earlier you begin smoking, the greater your risk of developing lung cancer is. That risk depends on the number of "pack-years", the number of years you have been smoking for multiplied by the number of packs of cigarettes smoked daily. For that calculation, use the pack year calculator.
The good news is that those risks can be quickly diminished just by quitting smoking (forever). Just look at our smoking recovery calculator and see how much your life might improve by after quitting. The earlier you quit, the faster you recover.
Don't forget that smoking not only affects your health, but also the health of your family and friends. Did you know that passive smoking is almost as dangerous as active smoking? Cancer, COPD, and other lung diseases are caused not by nicotine, but mostly by tar and other chemicals, easily inhaled by second-hand smokers.
