The volume conversion tool makes converting between the volume units easy. We automatically display the result in the eight most popular units, but if you need more, click on the unit name to browse through 21 variants.

Have you ever wondered how many cups there are in a pint? Or do you need to calculate the tablespoons in a cup or change pints to quarts? The volume converter can do it for you in real time.

Volume units

Choose the unit and convert freely between imperial and metric systems. Our calculator contains the following:

  • cubic millimeters (mm³);
  • cubic centimeters (cm³);
  • cubic decimeters (dm³);
  • cubic meters (m³);
  • cubic inches (cu in);
  • cubic feet (cu ft);
  • cubic yards (cu yd);
  • milliliters (ml);
  • liters (l);
  • gallons (US) / gallons (UK) (gal);
  • quarts (US) / quarts (UK) (qt);
  • pints (US) / pints (UK) (pt);
  • fluid ounces (US) / fluid ounces (UK) (fl oz);
  • US customary cups/glasses (236.59ml) (cups);
  • tablespoons (15 ml) (tablespoons); and
  • teaspoons (5 ml) (teaspoons).

Don't forget to check other great tools in our collection, such as the weight converter or length converter and the dimensional analysis calculator. If you need the converter for changing weight to volume in a recipe – use the grams to cups or density calculators.

There are many other volume conversion charts and tables available on the web, but thanks to this calculator, you don't need them anymore.

Here are some more conversions between different units:

  • cubic millimeters (mm³) – 1 billionth of a liter;
  • cubic centimeters (cm³) – ml, 1 thousandth of a liter;
  • cubic decimeters (dm³) – l, 1 thousandth of a cubic meter;
  • cubic meters (m³) – basic SI unit ;
  • cubic inches (cu in);
  • cubic feet (cu ft) – 1728 cubic inches;
  • cubic yards (cu yd) – 27 cubic feet;
  • milliliters (ml) – cm³, 1 thousandth of a liter; and
  • liters (l) – dm³, 1 thousandth of a cubic meter.

How to find the volume in a different unit?

Let's imagine that you want to bake a cake, but the problem is that the recipe comes from a different part of the world. You are used to your standard units, such as cups or pints, but you have no idea how much is 550 ml of milk. What can you do? Put that value in the calculator next to the milliliters unit, and immediately you will get the answer in cups (2.32), pints (1.16), or even teaspoons (110) if you wish.

FAQ

How do I convert from liters to gallons?

To convert from liters to gallons, use the following formula:
1 L = 0.264 gal (US) = 0.22 gal (UK).
You can quickly estimate the value of this conversion by dividing the volume in US gallons by 4: your result would be off by a bit more than 1%.

How do I convert volume in the metric system?

To convert the volume in the metric system, follow these easy steps:

  1. Identify the base unit: in this case, the cubic meter.
  2. Convert your value in the initial unit in cubic meters: here are the most common prefixes and how to convert them to :
    • cubic millimeter (mm³): divide by 1,000,000,000;
    • cubic centimeter (cm³): divide by 1,000,000;
    • cubic deciliter (dm³): divide by 1,000 (this is the liter).
  3. Convert the cubic meters in your final unit: apply the inverse conversion of the step before.

How much is 5 liters in cubic feet?

5 liters equal to 0.177 cubic feet (ft³). To find this result, you can follow these steps:

  1. Convert the volume in liters to a volume in cubic meters: divide by 1,000: 5 L = 0.005 m³.
  2. Find the conversion factor between cubic meters and cubic feet. Since 1 m = 3.281 ft, we find that 1 m³ = 3.281³ ft³ = 35.32 ft³.
  3. Convert 0.005 m³ in ft³: 0.005 m³ = 0.005 × 35.32 ft³ = 0.177 ft³.

You can also use the conversion factor 0.001 × 35.32 = 0.03532 directly.

Why do we measure volume in cubic meters?

We measure the volume in cubic meters because volume measures the space occupied in three dimensions by an object. Since the meter is a measure of length, the square meter measures a two-dimensional quantity. By multiplying another time by the measurement unit of length, we would find a three-dimensional measurement unit. You can measure volume by using the third power of any measurement unit of length: inches, feet, centimeters, kilometers, etc.
