Let's imagine that you want to bake a cake, but the problem is that the recipe comes from a different part of the world. You are used to your standard units, such as cups or pints, but you have no idea how much is 550 ml of milk. What can you do? Put that value in the calculator next to the milliliters unit, and immediately you will get the answer in cups (2.32), pints (1.16), or even teaspoons (110) if you wish.

To convert from liters to gallons, use the following formula:
1 L = 0.264 gal (US) = 0.22 gal (UK).
You can quickly estimate the value of this conversion by dividing the volume in US gallons by 4: your result would be off by a bit more than 1%.

To convert the volume in the metric system, follow these easy steps:

1. Identify the base unit: in this case, the cubic meter.
2. Convert your value in the initial unit in cubic meters: here are the most common prefixes and how to convert them to m³:
   • cubic millimeter (mm³): divide by 1,000,000,000;
   • cubic centimeter (cm³): divide by 1,000,000;
   • cubic deciliter (dm³): divide by 1,000 (this is the liter).
3. Convert the cubic meters in your final unit: apply the inverse conversion of the step before.

5 liters equal to 0.177 cubic feet (ft³). To find this result, you can follow these steps:

1. Convert the volume in liters to a volume in cubic meters: divide by 1,000: 5 L = 0.005 m³.
2. Find the conversion factor between cubic meters and cubic feet. Since 1 m = 3.281 ft, we find that 1 m³ = 3.281³ ft³ = 35.32 ft³.
3. Convert 0.005 m³ in ft³: 0.005 m³ = 0.005 × 35.32 ft³ = 0.177 ft³.

You can also use the conversion factor 0.001 × 35.32 = 0.03532 directly.

We measure the volume in cubic meters because volume measures the space occupied in three dimensions by an object. Since the meter is a measure of length, the square meter measures a two-dimensional quantity. By multiplying another time by the measurement unit of length, we would find a three-dimensional measurement unit. You can measure volume by using the third power of any measurement unit of length: inches, feet, centimeters, kilometers, etc.
